Exploring Coins

We have been really interested in learning about coins. Here are a few things we have been up to.

These students were using the counting mat to count up their coins.

This student was adding up coins and writing addition sentences to show their work.

This student was sorting the coins based on the picture that was on the coin.

This student was brain storming different ways they could make 41 cents.

Candy Heart Experiment!

We had a lot of fun completing our candy heart experiment! We had three liquids (water, soda, and vinegar) and we explored what happened to the candy when they went into the different types of liquid.

We realized that we could use our senses (like smell and touch) to differentiate the liquids even those they all looked the same. We noticed that water is clear and has no odor, soda has no odor but has bubbles if you touch it, and vinegar has a strong odor (one student compared it to laundry detergent).

What we learned: The type of liquid matters when dissolving candy. Vinegar is the best at dissolving the candy hearts because it is an acidic liquid. Since vinegar is acidic, it dissolved the candy faster than the soda (a sugary drink) and water.

Mazes

For our inquiry this week, we have been exploring mazes! Some students started our inquiry off with creating a maze at the light table.

From there, the idea of creating mazes took off in our class and our students wanted to make all different kinds of mazes. We made connections to the 3-D shapes we have been exploring in math.

Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is soon approaching! I’m sure many of your children are very excited. In kindergarten, not all our students are capable of writing out the names on cards to each individual peer in our classroom. To make Valentine’s Day inclusive to all our students, if you are sending in Valentine’s Day cards, please have your child write out their names only (please do not address to who the card is for)We will be having a party that day.

**We have 31 students in our class**

January's Inquiry- Hibernation

After a walk through our community, many of our students were very curious about where animals go when it gets cold. We decided to explore what happens to animals during the changes of the seasons.

Hibernation

After reading about different animals that hibernate, we made some art to depict where animals go to hibernate. We used modelling clay and smeared it onto our artwork.

Migration

We learned that many different animals move about during the changes of the seasons. We were really interested in how birds migrate to warmer climate. We decided to react birds migrating by doing some dramatic dance.

We then decided to make some puppets for our dramatic play area that were of different animals that migrate. Here are a few of them!

Colour Experiment

Our class was inspired to explore the concept of mixing colouring after reading the book, "Little Blue and Little Yellow". It made us curious about what different colours we could make when mixing colours.

One of our students noticed that the shade of colour depended the amount of dye we added to the water.

This is what we discovered!

Kidtastic

The students really enjoyed themselves while on our class trip to Kidtastic. Here are some pictures to show you what we got up to.
