For our student led inquiry, the class has been learning about outer space. We watched a video about rockets ships and the class decided they wanted to make their own rocket ships. Here are a pictures from our rocket building.

This student decided to attach a booster to his rocket in order for the rocket to increase it’s speed fast enough to go through the ozone (just like the rocket in our video).

Instead of making a rocket ship, this student decided to make a space station!

Blast off!

November 20th

We can another fantastic week in our class! We read the book, "Windblown", by Edouard Manceau that really got our artistic minds turning.

In Windblown, colourful, and oddly shaped scraps of paper blow in the wind. One by one, they take shape, transforming into animals. These are some of the animals that we created using the scraps of paper and our imaginations!

During our outdoor extended play, since the weather is going to be changing soon, we worked on our ball skills.

We practiced underhand throwing, rolling the ball, and a bounce pass to one another.

Finally, at the end, we played the game, monkey in the middle. The class claimed being the monkey was the funniest part!

Stuffed Animal Sorting Party

On Friday, November 20th the kindergarten students have been asked to bring in one stuffed animal from home. We are going to be using them to show off in our math groups all the different ways we have learned how to sort and organize them based on their attributes (colour, shape, size, texture, etc.).

November 12th

In Math, we are discussing identifying and organizing objects based on attributes. We sorted all different types of objects during math centers.
We sorted the small snap cubes by colour.

We sorted out pattern blocks by their shape.

And we even sorted our plastic animals into animals that have wings and animals that don't have wings (two different attributes).

November 6th

It is great to be back on the blog! The kindergarten class has been up to a lot of stuff, but here are a few of our favourite things we did this week!

We practiced finding numbers on a number line.

We had a blast building number towers that we rolled. At the end of the game, we had to determine which tower was the tallest. We counted them up to prove our prediction.

We built number mountains to see all the different ways we can compose numbers.
We started to explore number sentences.

In our dramatic play area, we open our Kinder Vet Clinic and it was a smashing success!

We used a stethoscope to listen to our patients heart. In a video we watched, we learned that some pets could have heart worms that could make them very sick and would need medicine.

After watching a video about what happens at a vet clinic, our students decided that we needed an X-ray machine to properly check if their patients bones were healthy. So we added our light table.

First Week

Well, we have officially finished our first week of school and it has flown by at record speed.  We have been playing lots of games to practice writing and recognizing our names.

What have we been playing with? Just about everything!

Our goal for September is recognizing and writing your own name independently.

Welcome to Kindergarten!

Welcome to school!  We had a great first day in Room 12.  We read stories, made friends, played outside and learned all about the classroom and school.  It was a fun, but very tiring day!  Check back regularly to see what we are up to in the classroom.

Also, please remember to send in the following items with your student:

  • emergency change of clothes
  • indoor shoes that students can manage on their own (slip-on or velcro)
  • headphones in a labelled bag
                                                          Thank you!
